Services Provided

Review Expertise offers freelance proofreading and copyediting, two essential services for anyone whose written work is to be read by others. Typographical and other types of errors bog down a project or manuscript's flow and readability. Errors also distract readers and can obscure your message.

As your proofreader, I will read your document after your final edit, find and mark the errors, and send you two Word Track Changes files: one with edits and comments visible, which will allow you to accept or reject my changes, and the second with my edits accepted for your review. Or, if you’d rather, I will make the corrections for you. Through the proofreading process, I will locate and correct typographical errors, misspelled words, punctuation and grammatical mistakes, double words, and, if requested, formatting errors. I will be the person who double checks your work, making sure none of the above unpleasant errors remain.

Most people think that copyediting is proofreading, and vice versa, but proofreading is actually a very narrow specialty. It’s the final look at your manuscript or document; it puts the finishing touches on it.

On the other hand, copyediting is broader and involves fixing sentence structure and changing words, among other tasks. In fact, copyediting is performed prior to proofreading. As your copyeditor, I will edit your work line by line to identify any mistakes that may be lurking within.

Through this editing process I will fix echo words and syntax mistakes, check for the correct sequence of chapter and page numbers, and, if applicable, analyze the table of contents, footnotes, and bibliography. I will also find inconsistencies, repair poorly structured phrases and unclear word usage, fix grammatical errors, and ensure that your document or manuscript follows your chosen style guide.

I Know What You're Thinking . . .

Is it "copyediting" (one word) or "copy editing" (two words)? They are both compound words, and they mean exactly the same thing. So, which is correct, and which is wrong?

According to Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, both are correct, though "copy editing" (two words) is more often used. But the Chicago Manual of Style, the style manual that I primarily use, lists "copyediting" (one word) in its glossary and other information about editing.

So, which is it? Well, I think that for a lot of people, it comes down to a matter of personal preference. Or a style sheet that dictates the use of one choice or the other can be used.

And when we work together, you may have similar choices to make. But, rest assured, if you have a preference, then you will make the final call.

Ok, now you're really ready!
